About Warri Community
Warri Community United Kingdom
(W.C.U)
is the umbrella organisation that represents all Itsekiris in the United
Kingdom.
W.C.U. was established in 1997 as a response to:
-
distress signals from the homeland in Nigeria for material help for our people, the Itsekiris;
-
difficulty our people living in the United Kingdom were experiencing with integration and assessing of the benefits of living in this great country.
The Itsekiris are
indigenous
micro-minority tribe in an
area known as the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. Our micro-minority
status is well known to UNESCO and Western European
governments. Our land
is saturated with crude oil. However, this blessing now seems like a
nightmare. Our numerically powerful neighbours surround us and our
efforts are to try and keep our identity within our recognised
boundaries.
We are a gentle and peaceful people and our culture and way of living is based on our royal heritage represented by our Olu, the King of Warri Kingdom. Hence the purpose of Warri Community in the United Kingdom is to:
-
work for the empowerment of the Itsekiri interests in the homeland and in the United Kingdom;
-
work to maintain our cultural identity and our rich peaceful way of life;
-
assist in fostering among all the Itsekiri people, common understanding to sustain lasting peace and tranquillity among the Itsekiris and other citizens in the United Kingdom;
-
provide financial or any form of assistance for any reasonable cause designed to further the interest and well being of the community and other Itsekiris in general;
-
raise funds from which to execute any special project deemed reasonable.
We are one people,
one language,
united in one Kingdom, one history and one destiny.
